One of the reasons why I chose an Audi S4 Avant as the successor to my STi was for the performance. I enjoy driving and wanted to sacrifice as little as possible in that area when upgrading my comfort and utility. I’d say I succeeded.
There’s a local 1/8th-mile dragstrip by my house run by Race Legal. I’ve taken my STi there a few times, and most recently had been running in the area of 9.1s. I took my new car there to compare and I’m glad to say that I haven’t given up much in the way of acceleration. The Audi made 9.6-second runs all night long, with 2.2-second 60′ times. That’s only 0.6 seconds slower than the STi, which has a manual transmission which allowed for nasssty AWD clutch-drop launches.
The AudiTiptronic automagic transmission was both a blessing and a curse, in that my launches weren’t as beastly as in the manual-transmission STi, but post-launch I could virtually fall asleep and run extremely consistent times. In bracket drag racing, consistency is what really matters (not that I’m going to compete in that, I’m just sayin’).
In the end, I’m very pleased with my purchase decision, as the Audi has been doing its primary job of commuting and short road tripping much better than the old Subaru. Viva la wagon!
